Finishing
- Once your panel is clean and dry, gently rub the entire panel, front first then the back, and the frame as well, with fine grade steel wool (000 or 0000). If you notice any greyish or whiteish discolouration on your solder seams, use a wire brush gently to scrap it off. Use steel wool to smooth off anywhere you used a wire brush.
- Spray your panel one side at a time with Kwik-Clean. Spray it and then wipe it off with clean towels. This will also pick up any steel wool bits still on your panel.
- Apply black or copper patina if you want at this time. If you are leaving it with a silver finish, skip ahead to the polishing section. Pour a little bit of patina onto your panel, and rub it around on the solder seams with a small piece of cloth (old socks, T-shirts). Do both sides, and then inspect your panel for any missed spots. Hold your panel at an angle, as right down low on the solder seams, close to glass, is where the patina usually is missed. Re-apply if necessary.
- Rinse the panel off with cool water, and pat dry with clean towels.
- Once the panel is completely dry, take a bottle of polish, shake it up, and pour a small amount on the front side of your panel. Use a dedicated rag or old sock and spread the polish over the surface of the panel. Take the softest towel or cloth you can find, and gently begin to buff the panel. Take your time here, and really work slowly and deliberately to get it all off. You need to get it all off at once, because if it dries to a milky white film, it becomes very hard to get off. When you do the backside, be very sparing with the polish over any heavily textured glass, as it can pool and dry in the texture and then be hard to get out. If you do get some in hard to remove places, use an old toothbrush to brush it away. Carefully inspect any bevels or other clear glass pieces, as any polish smears will be very visible once you are finished and the panel is up in the window.
- Pick a matching colour of chain in the necessary length, attach it to your hooks, and enjoy!
