Safety Precautions
- Safety glasses are required for all facets of doing stained glass. They must be worn at all times while in the work room.
- Glass is not the only source of danger. Lead and other chemicals like flux and patinas are toxic and must be treated with respect and care.
- After soldering, wash your hands throughly to remove any flux or lead residue.
- Always work in a well ventilated area. The main concern is with flux fumes. Use a small oscillating fan to disperse the fumes if necessary.
- Apply flux in small quantities, with a flux brush that has its bristles cut off at an angle. Avoid skin and eye contact, as it is an acid.
- Always keep a hot iron in a proper iron stand. If you leave it on the table, you could start a fire and burn down your house.
- You should be alert while soldering. If you feel tired, stop for a bit, walk around, go outside.
- If you are not using your soldering iron, unplug it and leave it in its stand.
- If you get a small cut, clean it and cover with a bandaid. They help prevent nasty stuff from getting inside you.
- Wash your hands when finished doing your stained glass work.
