Soldering Tip

The Hank Maneuver

Named for a student who accidently filled in the top holes on his zinc frame, where the Handy Hangers are to go. The solution we came up with was to use a drill and drill down through the solder to create a hole, and then brush flux on the outside of the zinc came. Then apply your hot iron to the outside of the zinc came where the excess solder is, until the solder melts down. You only need to melt away enough solder so your Handy Hangers can fit in. You can draw a mark on the side to indicate how far to go.

Finishing Tip

Getting tired of just Black patina or natural Silver finishes? Try gently rubbing your black solder seams with super fine steel wool, to take off just the top of the black patina. This will give you a nice antique pewter finish.

Friday Night Fusing Clinic

This has been very successful so far, and we are going to continue into the new year spreading joy and knowledge about fusing. With fusing, you can constantly learn all kinds of new ways of playing with glass in kilns.

It is on the second Friday of every month until May, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Each month will have a specific topic or demonstration. Any results of the previous month's topic will also be welcomed for display & discussion. Instead of a fee, we ask for non-perishable food donations for the Ottawa Food Bank. There is a new email listing on our website that you can sign up for to get a monthly reminder the Monday before the meeting.
