SGS's Mud Recipe (for use in Lead Came work):

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts whiting powder
  • 1 part Linseed Oil
  • 1 part Turpentine
  • Black colourant to suit

Mix, and adjust to create a whipped butter-like texture.

Mud will need to be remixed after about 20 minutes. You may need to add whiting or liquid the next day. Properly sealed in a can, this mixture should last weeks.

We carry the whiting powder, any hardware store should carry the liquids, and the black colourant can be found at Artguise, at 590 Bank St., 238.3803.

Stained Glass Tips

Use High-Friction tape from Lee Valley as a thumb protector while grinding. Thanks Stacie!

Use an old toothbrush and left over grinder glass sludge, brush clean your copper foil project just like you're brushing your teeth. Gives a interesting stainless steel look. (Do not brush teeth with grinder sludge). Good idea, Mark!

Safety First Tip: Do Not Wear sandals in your stained glass workshop/area. They may be easy to wear and comfy, but offer zero protection against glass sheets, shards, and hot solder. Closed toe shoes only while doing stained glass! One of our customers discovered this the hard way, and had several stitches in one toe as a result. Right, Mia?

Fusing Tip: Wear a dust mask when removing fused projects off a shelf where shelf paper was used. Have a dedicated bucket full of water to dunk your cooled project into, and wash off any sticking shelf paper in the water. With a damp sponge, sweep any remaining shelf paper off your kiln shelf into the bucket.
