Friday Night Fusing Clinic

We are now in our third season of sharing fusing tip and knowledge. We ask for a donation of non-perishable foodstuffs for the Ottawa Food Bank in lieu of a fee for these sessions. Meetings are from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, on the second Friday of each month.

  • December 7th: Decals & DichroSlide
  • January 11th: Face Masks
  • February 8th: Wall Mounting Systems
  • March 14th: Common Kiln Repairs
  • April 11: Etching Dichroic
  • May 9: Glues / Wrap-Up Party

Fusing Tip:

When measuring a mold before cutting the glass to fuse then slump into it, only measure in a straight line across the widest points of the mold. Do not add extra to take into account the depth of the mold. The glass will stretch down a little and you will have a slightly smaller bowl or plate than what the actual mold dimensions are.

For example, with the 12" Ruffled Bowl that has a 2" depth to it, your 12" flat fused blank will end up as a 11" wide bowl that is 2" deep. The risk is that that your mold will end up cracked or damaging as the glass slumps into and drapes over the outer edges of the mold, pinching it tightly.

What is a stable?

Every Christmas morning, when my kids were little, I read them the nativity story out of the big family bible.

When my son was old enough to talk, he asked me what a stable was. I thought for a moment how to explain it to him in terms he could understand, then told him, "It's something like your sister's room, but without a stereo."
