Friday Night Fusing Clinic

December 07, 2007 - Decals & Dichroslide!

Decals can be used on any COE glass in a kiln. There are a few brands we carry, Pro-Fusion's Decal Magic, Dicro Slide, and Carefree Luster decal sheets. Each has a wide range of product sizes, colours and designs. It is a real dichroic effect applied onto a special paper with a carrier film on it. You wet the paper and the film with the dichroic colour slides off onto your glass, which you can then fire in the kiln. The advantages of using this product is that you can be very creative with the placement and look of the dichroic without the mass of the commercially made dichroic sheet glass.

Applying Decals

You can cut the decals out with regular scissors or fancy scrap-booking scissors, or fancy paper punches. These can be found in scrap-booking store or arts & crafts stores, like Michael's, or even office supply stores like Staples.

Make sure your glass is clean or dirt, grease and lint. Clean with alcohol. Soak piece of decal in a small container of clean, warm, shallow water for about 30 seconds. Put a few drops of water at the spot on the glass where the decal is to be positioned. Lift the paper out of the water with tweezers, and gently slide the decal off the paper onto the glass. If you need to move the decal around, try either wooden skewers or Q-Tips. Once the decal is in place, blot dry gently with paper towel. Allow to dry fully.

Firing Schedule

The firing schedules vary according to manufacturers and type of decal. Follow the directions included with the decals. Some suggest venting the kiln, others say fire normally.
